Davy Jones passed away six years ago on February 29, 2012. The Monkees Live Almanac salutes the memory of Davy, and, like everyone, is still saddened that he's gone.
Thanks, Davy, for all the memories, laughs, and good times.

It was announced earlier today that "The Monkees Present: The Mike Nesmith & Micky Dolenz Show" will come to The Paramount in Huntington, New York on June 23. Tickets go on sale Friday, March 2 (but a presale begins tomorrow at 10am EST.)
Don't forget to vote in two new polls that were published on the Live Almanac's blog last night concerning which songs you'd like to hear Micky and Mike play this June. The response has been nothing short of phenomenal: over 350 people have participated in each poll in less than 24 hours! "The Monkees Present: The Mike Nesmith & Micky Dolenz Show" is heading out across North America this June. Fans are already contemplating the potential for set list surprises, and The Monkees Tour Facebook page is asking for suggestions on what the duo should perform. To get into the spirit of things, The Monkees Live Almanac is now running two polls asking fans to select five songs that they would like to hear performed by Mike and Micky this June. But first, a little background on the songs I decided to place in the running. I left out all of the big hits along with some other set list perennials like "Randy Scouse Git," "Papa Gene's Blues," "Goin' Down," "What Am I Doing Hangin' 'Round?", "She," "Mary, Mary," etc. The press release promised that "the shows will highlight many of Nesmith’s compositions, including some that have never been performed live." With that preview, I thought it made sense to omit all of Michael's songs from albums like Headquarters, or his B-sides such as "Tapioca Tundra," as it is likely a healthy chunk of those songs will make the cut. In comments made here on the Live Almanac's blog, on Facebook, and elsewhere, I've read about the desire to hear Michael's "Writing Wrongs" and Micky's "Shorty Blackwell," but I just don't think they will be rehearsed and thus their absence from the poll. There have been a few hints about the set list since the tour was announced on February 20. Last week, Monkees archivist Andrew Sandoval, who is producing the tour, was interviewed by Tom Scharpling on The Best Show. Andrew said that at least two songs from Good Times! are likely to be played ("Me & Magdalena" and "Birth of an Accidental Hipster"), but he doubted that anything from Justus or Pool It! would be included. When the discussion moved to the potential for solo cuts, Andrew said that it wasn't out of the realm: "So far that has been discussed and it looks like there will be some early Mike solo stuff because a lot of that was recorded while he was still in The Monkees." Scharpling also asked about the potential for the inclusion of some of Micky's early 1970s MGM singles, but the conversation was sidetracked and nothing more was said about it. Sandoval also revealed that playing "Nine Times Blue" has been considered, and that it's a possibility Micky could sing songs written by Peter Tork, such as "For Pete's Sake" and "Can You Dig It." (Micky sang the lead vocal on these tracks on the original recordings but since 1986, Peter has sang them live in concert.) Andrew furthermore relayed that a lot of "Michael Monkee-era songs that have never been done live" are also being talked about. On a personal note, I would love to hear Micky attempt "Oh Someone" or something like "Daybreak" from his MGM run on this tour. As a result of Andrew's comments, I included in the polls a lot of Nesmith-penned songs like "Don't Call on Me," "Auntie's Municipal Court," and "All the King's Horses" that have never been aired in concert. (It is believed Nez wanted to tackle "Auntie's Municipal Court" on the 2013 Monkees tour but Micky allegedly vetoed it.) I also picked tracks like "Midnight Train," "Mommy and Daddy," and "Bye Bye Baby Bye Bye," all Dolenz originals and some of which ("Mommy and Daddy" especially) have been requested by fans to be played live for years. ("Midnight Train" was aired briefly, albeit in an abridged version, in 2015 during the Dolenz/Tork shows that year.) There are some wild cards in the polls as well. "Tear Drop City" has never been performed live by The Monkees in any incarnation. "Salesman" was last played in Japan and Australia in 1968, and "I Won't Be the Same Without Her," a fan favorite from Instant Replay, has also never made its way onto a Monkees concert set list. Some readers might be wondering about the absence of "Love Is Only Sleeping," another classic from Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd., but I'm guessing it might be more realistic to hear "The Door Into Summer." The Good Times! bonus track "Terrifying" was included as a wide array of fans (and Sandoval himself) have praised it as one of Micky's best in recent years. "You Bring the Summer" was a crowd favorite on the 50th Anniversary Tour and would be fitting for these early summer shows. And "All of Your Toys" is such a key song in the history of The Monkees' battle with Don Kirshner that seeing Nez partake in its performance would be something special. ("All of Your Toys" made its set list debut in 2011 when Micky, Davy, and Peter spotlighted it during the 45th Anniversary World Tour, but it hasn't been played live since.) And now finally, it's time to vote! Please participate in both polls where you can select up to five songs in each. (You can also listen to the individual tracks if you scroll down past the polls.) The Monkees Tour Facebook page is asking for set list suggestions by March 4, and it says that the responses "will be tabulated...and reviewed directly by Mike & Micky." I will collect the results from the Live Almanac's polls and forward them to Andrew Sandoval at that time. If I left out a song you'd like to hear, feel free to post your selections in the comments. Happy voting! Poll #1: VOTE!Poll #2: VOTE!
In the latest Live Almanac poll, fans have selected Magnetic South as their favorite album by the First National Band.
Sessions for the album began on February 10, 1970 at RCA Hollywood. Felton Jarvis (Elvis Presley, etc.) was credited as producer, but in reality he rarely attended the sessions, which lasted through late March. Jarvis, however, did sign Michael to RCA Records, and Magnetic South became a showcase for Michael's unique blending of country and rock. Magnetic South was the first in a trilogy of albums by the First National Band. Loose Salute (1970) and Nevada Fighter (1971) would follow. Thanks for voting!
The general on sale for tickets to "The Monkees Present: The Mike Nesmith & Micky Dolenz Show" began yesterday. In a message on Twitter, tour producer Andrew Sandoval relayed that he was pleased with the initial sales reports:
This past January during a 5-concert jaunt throughout California, Michael Nesmith brought new life to his initial post-Monkees outfit, The First National Band. Originally consisting of Nez, Red Rhodes, John London, and John Ware, the group released three albums between 1970 and 1971, but their live performance history was fairly limited. Ignored and almost shunned by audiences and peers during their heyday, the music of the First National Band has since been cited by critics and contemporaries as a pioneering influence in the country rock genre. In one of the more unexpected moves of Michael Nesmith's career, a reconstituted First National Band hit the road in early 2018 with Christian Nesmith (guitar), Jonathan Nesmith (piano/guitar/vocals), Circe Link (vocals), Christopher Allis (drums), Jason Chesney (bass), Amy Spear (vocals), and Pete Finney (pedal steel). Sadly, original members Rhodes and London have passed away, but Ware gave his blessing to the project and wished everyone well. The concerts by the First National Band Redux, as they were dubbed, were ultimately a critical and commercial triumph. And now, The Monkees Live Almanac is proud to be the first to share the details about a forthcoming live album from 7a Records that will document this unique event in Nesmith/First National Band history. Since 2015, 7a Records and its proprietors Glenn Gretlund and Iain Lee have been producing Monkees-related releases, including a collection of Micky Dolenz's 1970s MGM singles, Bobby Hart's first solo album, various limited edition vinyl 45s (Dolenz/Davy Jones/Dolenz with Circe Link & Christian Nesmith), and more recently, vintage and new live recordings by both Nesmith and Dolenz. And now 7a has made an agreement with Michael Nesmith and the members of the First National Band to release a live album documenting their January 2018 performances. "We are extremely proud and excited to be able to work with Michael Nesmith and the First National Band on this album," Glenn told the Live Almanac. "What I have heard so far literally gave me goose bumps. It's that good. By all accounts this will be a superb album and one of 7a Records' biggest releases to date." Iain was just as enthused. "If you’d have told 15-year-old me I’d be releasing a brand new First National Band live album on my own record label I’d have laughed in your face. This is a dream come true and is the culmination of years of hard work and dreaming from both myself and my business partner Glenn. We make it our business to only release records that we would buy and man, I’d buy a dozen copies of this. It’s a thrill and an honor to be working with Michael and the band on this. And you wait until you hear what Christian [Nesmith] has done with the production. Stunning." As Iain said, Christian Nesmith is currently in the process of mixing and mastering the recordings, but at this moment, it has not yet been decided whether the album will consist of one full show or a compilation of the best performances from the various stops on the tour. Nez will have the final vote once everything has been mixed. The following songs are very likely to be included on the album:
Be sure to check back with The Monkees Live Almanac as Glenn and Iain have promised more details about the upcoming First National Band live album release as they become available. I would also like to take a moment to thank both Glenn Gretlund and Iain Lee for sharing this news with the Live Almanac and its readers, and for their constant support of the site. UPDATE 4/22/2018: Iain Lee is reporting on Facebook that 7a hopes to release the First National Band live album in July 2018. It will be available on compact disc and as a 2-LP set.

Earlier today on Facebook, Circe Link seemingly confirmed that both she and Christian Nesmith will be a part of the Nesmith/Dolenz concerts this June:
![]()
Circe Link joined The Monkees' backing band for the first time during the 2014 spring tour, performing backing vocals with Coco Dolenz, and more recently with Michael Nesmith's First National Band Redux.
A singer, songwriter, and musician in her own right, Circe has previously described her music as ranging from "Cowboy Jazz to Alternative to Americana." She has recorded several albums, including a live CD from a successful tour of Japan. Circe writes, records, and performs with her companion, Christian Nesmith. "I think putting together a collection of songs is like curating an art show," Circe told Riveting Riffs. "I was a painter for a long time, so I think about things visually. We don't sit on anything around here for a couple of years. If it is hot, it’s hot and we are working on it and we get it out the door. I think that is one of the reasons we are productive." Circe's most recent album, Enchanted Objects and Ordinary Things, is available on compact disc and as a digital download. ![]()
Christian Nesmith is Michael's eldest son and was often seen in photographs in 1960s teen magazines posing with his dad and mom, Phyllis. He joined The Monkees' backing band upon his father's return to the group in 2012.
Christian has a long list of musical accomplishments. His songs have been heard in both film and TV (Blades of Glory, The Hills Have Eyes, Lionheart) and he has composed commercials for companies ranging from AOL to ESPN to Starbucks. His theater credits include being the musical director for the first ever production of Hair in Moscow, Russia. Christian was also musical director for Hair in Los Angeles in 2007 (which also featured Circe Link), and that production was awarded Best Musical of the Year by LA Weekly. In 2016, Christian contributed greatly to the arrangement of "Birth of an Accidental Hipster," a key track from The Monkees' album Good Times! Christian's latest work, The Other Side, is available on compact disc and as a digital download.

"These 16 special performances will feature songs that span the group's entire career – from its 1966 eponymous debut to 2016’s Good Times," reads the press release, which appears in full below. "The shows will highlight many of Nesmith's compositions, including some that have never been performed live." Both Michael and Micky also issued statements about the upcoming performances. "I love being onstage with Micky," Nesmith says. "We've been collaborating for over 50 years, so it's hard to believe it’s never been just the two of us. I'm excited to dust off some tunes that I haven’t played for a long time too." Dolenz agreed, adding: "Right from the get-go, I admired Mike's songs," he said. "When we used to get together around the campfire to sing in the early days, we were always doing his songs. We always had such a great a vocal blend; he was the one who encouraged me to write songs of my own. I've always been a big fan and now we finally get to do the Mike & Micky show that we riffed on back when we were shooting The Monkees." The press release also discusses Peter Tork's absence from the tour. "Original Monkee Peter Tork will not take part in the tour," it reads. "Instead, he’s focusing on Relax Your Mind, a new album by Peter Tork and Shoe Suede Blues that honors the music of Lead Belly. The album is available now via CD Baby and Bandcamp. “I have in general made no secret of the fact that all these recent years of Monkees-related projects, as fun as they’ve been, have taken up a lot of my time and energy. Moving forward, I have blues projects that I want to give my attention to, hence Relax Your Mind. So, I’m shifting gears for now, but I wish the boys well, and I’ve learned to never say never on things further down the line.” THE PRESS RELEASELOS ANGELES – Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz of The Monkees will hit the road in June for their first-ever national tour as a duo. So, I’m shifting gears for now, but I wish the boys well, and I’ve learned to never say never on things further down the line.” “The Monkees Present: The Mike & Micky Show” is the latest chapter in Monkee-mania, a saga that began in 1965 when four young men were cast in a television show about a struggling rock band that was inspired by the Beatles’ A Hard Day’s Night. Few could have predicted the impact the Monkees would have on music and pop culture at large, one that still reverberates more than 50 years later. Formed in Los Angeles for the eponymous television series, the quartet of Dolenz, Nesmith, Tork and the late Davy Jones brought a singular mix of pop, rock, psychedelia, Broadway and country to their music. The Monkees’ first single, “Last Train to Clarksville,” was released in 1966 and quickly headed for the top spot of the Billboard charts, where it would ultimately sit for 13 of the 78 weeks it remained in the Top 200. (Two decades later, in the midst of a new burst of Monkee-mania, The Monkees popped back onto the charts, bringing the total number of weeks to 102.) By the time the series aired its final new episode on March 25, 1968, the Monkees had seen three further albums top the charts --More of the Monkees, Headquarters, and Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones, Ltd. All were released in 1967, staggeringly enough, racking up several more hit singles, with “I’m A Believer,” “(I’m Not Your) Steppin’ Stone,” “A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You,” “The Girl I Knew Somewhere,” “Pleasant Valley Sunday,” “Words,” “Daydream Believer,” “Valleri,” and “Tapioca Tundra” all finding their way into the Billboard Top 40. The final tally: 16 million albums and 7.5 million singles sold in a mere 2 1/2 years. After the series’ two-season run, the group went on to star in the cult feature film Head (co-written by Jack Nicholson) and a TV special (33 1/3 Revolutions Per Monkee) while also continuing to record new material. But as the ’60s gave way to the ’70s, the members of the Monkees eventually gave in to their individual musical interests and went their separate ways . . . for awhile. In February 1986, after MTV broadcast a marathon of The Monkees, Dolenz, Jones, and Tork reunited for a 20th anniversary tour, with Nesmith joining them onstage for the Los Angeles date of the tour. In 1996, all four members of the group reunited for a new album (Justus) and TV special (Hey, Hey, It’s the Monkees). In the wake of Jones’s death on February 29, 2012, the surviving members of the Monkees reunited and performed a series of concerts. The shows were received so triumphantly that Dolenz, Nesmith and Tork returned the following summer for a tour dubbed, “A Midsummer’s Night With the Monkees.” To celebrate the Monkees’ 50th anniversary in 2016, the surviving members of the band recorded the critically acclaimed album Good Times. Much like the Monkees’ early albums, it featured tracks written for the band by a group of gifted songwriters, including Ben Gibbard (Death Cab for Cutie), Rivers Cuomo (Weezer), Andy Partridge (XTC) and more. To support the album, Dolenz and Tork launched a successful tour that featured Nesmith on four shows.
An announcement of "The Monkees Present: The Mike Nesmith & Micky Dolenz Show" is imminent. Earlier this afternoon, two dates appeared on Ticketmaster/Live Nation, with tickets advertised as going on sale this Friday, February 23:
June 1: Chandler Center for the Arts / Chandler, Arizona
June 9: South Shore Room at Harrah's Lake Tahoe Resort and Casino / Stateline, Nevada
Speculation about Michael and Micky hitting the road was confirmed by Nez himself last month in an interview with Rolling Stone. "This isn't Monkee Michael and Monkee Micky going out," Nez told Andy Greene. "If we go out on another tour and we do it and use the Monkees logo and name to promote it, it will be very different than a Monkees show. I mean, it'll be Monkees music, but there's no pretense there about Micky and I being the Monkees. We're not. We're the remnants, but we'll have a good time if we do it."
The article also featured a quote from Peter Tork explaining his absence. “I’m shifting gears for now, but I wish the boys well,” Peter said, noting his desire to focus on current projects with Shoe Suede Blues. “And I’ve learned to never say never on things further down the line."
Stay tuned to the Live Almanac for more details coming soon!

This Henry Diltz photograph that was embellished by Barbara Lorraine turned up in the Live Almanac's Facebook feed. Looks great, Barbara!
Last night at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, California, Micky Dolenz participated in a benefit concert for the Autism Think Tank. The show was presented by the Wild Honey Foundation and spotlighted the music of Buffalo Springfield. Richie Furay, Buffalo Springfield co-founder, was also part of the event, and Monkees archivist and producer Andrew Sandoval played in the band. Ever since Michael Nesmith reconstituted the First National Band for a series of exclusive concerts last month, I have received many inquiries asking where to find the music of the First National Band, and in particular, which releases were best to seek out. For my money, the late 1990s/early 2000s compact discs by BMG/Camden are the superior representations of Michael's RCA work. The label released the albums as two-in-one reissues. Below are scans of the Magnetic South/Loose Salute CD from 1999. The BMG/Camden reissues of Michael's RCA albums are readily available on Amazon:
