Melbourne, Australia Set List: Nez delivers on promise to perform "Grand Ennui" during return to the Palais

6/16/2019

In a post on Facebook yesterday, Michael Nesmith talked about The Palais Theatre in Melbourne, Australia, site of the recording of his 1977 live album and the current stop on his tour with Micky Dolenz. Nez ruminated about his band then and now, the slide guitar work of son Christian, and one of his best loved solo cuts, "Grand Ennui."
Long ago memories include the "Live at the Palais" album I made here on the stage of the Palais. Quite a different venue it was in 1977. It has been remodeled and from the pictures I see is now a stunning reincarnation of the original. When I go to soundcheck I will listen for remnant noise of that concert -- although I doubt I will hear anything, really. Just see a low smoke from a dying fire burning my eyes.

The 1977 Palais band was John Ware,-- drums; David Mackay-- bass; Al Perkins -- slide and electric guitar; James Trumbo -- keys. I did overdubs years later to correct technical and craft problems. The original band had plenty, although -- if I may -- say it was an outstanding band.

After "repairs" I am not sure what the improvement was, so slight and subtle they were. I always felt like overdubbing a live album was sort of cheating -- but I have a different sense of that now. I think the final Palais product may indeed be better than the original --- but it is hard for me to say. Everyone in that original band had their own ideas about what Palais was and where it fit.

The band Mick and I are working with now is better by some order of magnitude than the "original." This band has few lapses --- the occasional tempo variation and the wandering intonation of my singing are much less now --- players are generally better and being up on stage with Mick is a real advance.

This new band hasn't really had the time it needs to iron out wrinkles. Although Christian, who plays the slide guitar on Grand Ennui has surpassed all my expectations. He is becoming an outstanding slide player. He can use some time playing at the feet of the greats -- but he would bring as much to that party as he would take, I think.

I am thinking of doing an homage version tonight of Grand Ennui to mark the passage of the original. Al Perkins was and is an undisputed slide champ --- but forgive me if as a proud papa I take the bet on Christian for his current level of skill. Grand Ennui might reach a new level tonight. God knows I have worked long and hard to birth this baby.

In any case the performance will be a return to the ghosts this evening and a kind of reincarnation of the original -- with new players and new skills. I think the show is sold out -- but just in case,I hope to see you there if you can make it.

It is a new day dawning for sure. From halfway across the world it seems the haters and smart alec's are abating. A good thing to mark in my book.

You know you're in trouble when you're "making the best of it."

Here is the set list from last evening's performance by Micky, Michael, and the band, which included "Grand Ennui" in the second act, at The Palais Theatre in Melbourne, Australia, courtesy of Andrew Sandoval:

Micky Dolenz and Michael Nesmith continue their current tour of Australia tomorrow with a show at the Palais Theatre in Melbourne, Australia. Micky and Peter Tork performed at the Palais in late 2016, and the venue was also the source of Michael's 1978 album, Live at The Palais.

And for those inquiring, the set lists for all shows Down Under after opening night in Christchurch, New Zealand on June 8 have remained the same. (Check out the Christchurch set list here.) Thanks to Andrew Sandoval for confirming these details!

7a Records announces "Davy Jones Live in Japan" in multiple formats with bonus tracks (UPDATED)

Davy Jones Live in Japan 7a Records

Iain Lee and Glenn Gretlund, co-founders of 7a Records, have revealed the details surrounding their latest upcoming release. Davy Jones Live in Japan will highlight two of Davy Jones' early 1980s Japanese live albums, Live in Japan (1981) and Hello Davy (1982), while also providing fans with a bevy of bonus materials, including Davy's Japanese singles from this era on CD and vinyl and a DVD of one his concerts filmed in Japan in August 1981.

Japan experienced the first rebirth of The Monkees in the 1980s even before Davy, Micky Dolenz, and Peter Tork reunited for the mega-successful 20th Anniversary Tour of North America in 1986. When "Daydream Believer" was used in a Kodak commercial in Japan in 1980, Monkeemania was rekindled as the group's television show returned to the airwaves and Monkees albums were reissued, causing them to chart in that country once again. Demand for The Monkees was so high in Japan that Davy, Micky, and Peter (with The New Monks) all toured there individually between 1981 and 1982, playing to extremely enthusiastic audiences. Davy also released several solo singles in Japan during this time period, including "Dance Gypsy" and "It's Now."

7a's Davy Jones Live in Japan arrives on August 9, 2019 (a week earlier in the United Kingdom) in two different formats, all of which will contain bonus materials.

First, a triple vinyl LP set will include both of Davy's early '80s Japanese live albums along with a 28 page booklet that replicates an
original Davy Jones Japanese tour program. Pressed on individually colored vinyl (red, white, and blue), the third LP is dedicated solely to bonus tracks (alternate mixes and single sides, including all of Davy's Japanese 45s).

There will also be a 2CD + DVD set consisting of both live albums, 22 bonus tracks of alternate mixes and single sides, and a 24 page color booklet with liner notes by Iain Lee and Mark Kleiner. This set also exclusively features a DVD of the Hello Davy concert which has been transferred from a LaserDisc issued in Japan in 1982.

Stay tuned to The Monkees Live Almanac for further previews of this release, and be sure to pre-order below!
