Earlier today it was announced that The Monkees will grace the cover of the upcoming March 2022 issue of MOJO. Featuring an interview with Micky Dolenz and a piece by David Fricke, look for it in bookstores soon. You can also purchase a copy online or select the digital download option. "As the world mourns Michael Nesmith, MOJO celebrates the ’60s phenomenon who transcended prefab pop – and the solo flights of their coolest member. His legacy: country-rock, MTV, that hat and more."
"In honor of the recently departed Michael Nesmith – the cool muso heart of the Monkees – and with the help of an exclusive new Micky Dolenz interview, we celebrate the group once dubbed the Prefab Four and explore the insanity of their ’60s rise and fall." In his latest piece for Rolling Stone, senior writer Andy Greene goes behind the scenes of the Monkees Farewell Tour and reveals his last interactions with Michael Nesmith: *** UPDATE 1/10/2022 ***Hello readers of the Monkees Live Almanac,
I understand the passion that surrounds a variety of topics discussed in Mr. Greene's article linked above, and the public comments left on this blog post to date reflect those passions. However, it is my desire to keep this forum from becoming overly personal in comments made about one person or the next. As a result, I deleted several comments. Thank you for your consideration and understanding.
In late November, voting commenced for the 16th Annual "Coolest Song of the Year" listener poll courtesy of the Sirius XM channel, Little Steven's Underground Garage. Micky Dolenz was nominated for his version of the Monkees classic, the Michael Nesmith-penned "Circle Sky," as heard in a brand new arrangement on Micky's 2021 solo album, Dolenz sings Nesmith.
A few hours ago, Micky shared the news on Facebook that "Circle Sky" has taken top honors in the poll: Happy New Year! Rounding out the top 10 of the "Coolest Song of the Year" poll results were the following songs and artists:
#10: "You’re So Good To Me" (Grip Weeds)
#9: "Sway Little Player" (Shang Hi Los) #8: "Atomic Love” (Prima Donna) #7: "Save Me" (Stupidity) #6: "Do The Resurrection!" (Gentlemen Rogues) #5: "Out For Blood" (Jennie Vee) #4: "Run Baby Run" (Southern Culture On The Skids) #3: "Shattered" (Marc Ribler) #2: "Wreckless Abandon" (Dirty Knobs)
Just last week, Micky received more critical acclaim for Dolenz sings Nesmith when Rolling Stone editor Rob Sheffield listed Micky's version of "Propinquity" as one of the best songs of 2021.
Thank you for supporting The Monkees Live Almanac for another year. The loss of Michael Nesmith earlier this month was sorrowful, but it's especially heartening to know that he was able to bid a fond farewell during his performances with Micky Dolenz this fall. Listen to the band, indeed. In tribute to Nez and in the spirit of the season, here's Michael's rendition of "Snowfall," the 1941 composition by Claude Thornhill and Ruth Thornhill, which has been recorded by a variety of performers over time. Nez's version, featuring his son Jonathan, was included on The Monkees' holiday album, Christmas Party.

The Hollywood Reporter: Michael Nesmith, Singer, Songwriter and Guitarist of The Monkees, Dies at 78
I’m heartbroken.
Monkees historian, producer, and manager Andrew Sandoval is the author of The Monkees: The Day-By-Day Story. In a message posted on Facebook earlier today, Andrew marked the passing of Michael Nesmith:
It is with deep sadness that I mark the passing of Michael Nesmith. We shared many travels and projects together over the course of 30 years, which culminated in a Monkees farewell tour that wrapped up only a few weeks ago. |
