This May, Friday Music will release two different vinyl editions of Greatest Hits, the very first compilation of Monkees music originally issued by Colgems Records in June 1969. Here are the details, courtesy of Friday Music, and thanks to Scott Nelson for the heads-up! In 1969, Colgems Records honored their hugely successful recording act The Monkees with their first smash hits album simply titled "The Monkees Greatest Hits." The 14 track masterpiece is loaded with hit singles like "Daydream Believer," "Last Train To Clarksville," "I'm A Believer," "Pleasant Valley Sunday," & "Valleri." The amazing LP was only in print for a very short time, making it an instant collector's item five decades ago. Now, Friday Music is pleased to announce 50th Anniversary super limited edition 180 gram orange audiophile vinyl release of "The Monkees Greatest Hits." Impeccably mastered by Joe Reagoso (The Monkees) from the Colgems Records tapes, the masterwork is also packaged in the original artwork design that was seen in record shops back in 1969. More hit tracks like "(I'm Not Your) Steppin' Stone," "Valleri," "She," and "Shades Of Gray" are included as well as a super rare stereo mix of "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You" to further enhance your Monkees listening experience. ...great. Clog up precious pressing plant time with a reissue of music that already exists in a zillion other editions. Classy.

Amen, bro. That's 3 GH albums in less than 3 months. How about getting some more previously unreleased material out to the fans?

This is ridiculous. I can understand the Artista reprint... its an actual classic that spawned generations of fans...

I agree. What is the point? Who is actually going to buy this? It has no obvious target audience.

You bring up an interesting point about Changes. Colgems was obviously completely disconnected from anything resembling a marketing strategy by this point. I mean, even the track listing could have been used to promote the band (or project); put the hits on, but then throw on something like Someday Man, Man Without A Dream or Tear Drop City to drive previous fans to the newer stuff... I love Zor & Zam, but it makes zero sense on a GH record.

It makes Changes cover look like the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel! LMAO!!! As an album, 'Changes' is pretty abysmal, but so is 'More Of The Monkees'. So many of the tracks on 'More...' are the submitted demo with a Monkee vocal instead of Carole King's or Neil Diamond's, etc. The audio quality of most of the backing tracks are sorely lacking. Boyce & Hart should have been allowed to do 'More...'. 'Kickin' Stones (Teeny Tiny Gnome)' is a better song than 80% of 'More...', yet it's supposedly the reason B&H got shit-canned!

I happen to like this collection for its interesting inclusions (Zor and Zam) juxtaposed against the shopworn classics. And yes, I even dig the cover. It's the damn Monkees...relax.

Agree with you all .... I gotta complain about this as well. Too many GH releases. I bought most of the Deluxe CD releases, not all. I am a big fan, but not a completist. I will likely skip on this one. I bought a copy of the 69 vinyl not too long ago for a good price. I just haven't even bothered to play it to see if it skips.

For those who didn't know, this is the 3nd time FRIDAY MUSIC has released this album. The first was a limited edition "creamsicle" color vinyl limited to 500 pressings. Then a black vinyl 180 gram pressing. Both were done in 2011. Friday Music is repetitive with all of their artists and out to make the quick buck. This time on Peter's passing as a tool to promote!

Friday Music NEVER released ANY new to us Monkees music. On vinyl the only interesting thing so far was "Justus" but as far as I remember reading somewhere this wasn't a copy from the master recordings - only a digital-t-vinyl transfer which doesn't make any sense at all.

I'm for that!!! Would also like for Rhino/Friday Music to update the liner notes and correct wrong song titles. Hey, for the $$$ they charge, they should put out a high quality and correct product!

I don't need it. I still have my Colgems original although the cover is a bit beat up.

There was a second greatest hits released in '69. It's called 'Monkees' Golden Hits'. The catalog # is PRS-329. Colgems - Manufactured and Distributed by RCA. For a "Golden Hits", it has the utterly abysmal 'The Day We Fall In Love' on it. Track listing is:
