Michael's Facebook post on January 24, 2015:
I’m about a third to half way through my new book, "Listen to the Band." Don’t jump to any conclusions because of that title. The book is non-fiction and non-what you think. I do think you are going to like it — I am loving writing it.
This post is a product of that writing effort and I wanted to share this with you because I got excited about a part I am writing now. There are no spoilers here. I won’t say too much — there is plenty of research material out there and if you want to know more on this subject — it is easy to find.
One of the most important musical influences of mine, and for me, is Peggy Jones. I'm going to guess and say most of you have probably never heard of her.
She was Bo Diddley’s guitar player from around 1957 to 1962. Those were the years that were most important to me of BD’s material and recordings. For those of you old enough to remember the first Monkees tour — Peggy Jones "Lady Bo" is the reason I played and sang "Can’t Judge a Book by Lookin’ at the Cover" in my solo section of those concerts.
I intend to tell you much more about her in "Listen to the Band" — sometime later this year. I don’t know Lady Bo personally — a situation I hope to change this year, but she lives in every musical note I sing and every strum I have ever taken on a guitar.
Here in her own words:
"I am a female executive in a man’s world who deserves more pay for what I do. Think about it. After Memphis Minnie, Rosetta Tharpe and forty three years ago there wasn't anyone else. I am a history of a woman in music all by myself I am a proud mixed woman of color who is educated and these are my hats: Major Recording Artist, National & International Tours, Concerts and Special Events…[the list goes on]
As a performer, with a guitar in my hands I am to be considered armed with a lean, mean, slap in the face trademark guitar style, and Dangerous as a singer can get, smooth as silk, class on sass, well versed with excellent technique, a diversified upscale act with no label on the package.
I am not an entertainer who creates copy nor am I the daughter of someone famous. I’ve walked down the path many light years ago to prove that…Yes, I can do this. Watch me fly! …….LADY BO.
And finally, if you are reading this…….somebody listened!"
