"I see the most when the sun is behind me. The only occlusion then is my own shadow. Looking directly in the sun blinds me. I have to close my eyes and feel the warmth and radiation of light, but I am informed by what I see when that light is behind me and illumines the way before me, like a guiding hand.
So it is with The Long Sandy Hair of Neftoon Zamora. Her hair is arrayed before me now like the wandering highways across a southwestern desert in North America, but it is a global and universal phenomenon I share with people everywhere. Writing is my way forward along these roads since they are infinite in their possibilities, and I can go where I will.
To that end I have begun writing the Little Horse lectures, as a continuation of the journey that Nez started years ago. These lectures were actually written when I wrote LSHONZ but they were not part of that narrative as far as pushing a story line along, so I set them aside.
Recently I opened them up and gave them a comb and rinse, so to speak, and looked to see where they might take me.
It has not been a helpful idea to announce things I am working on, but there has always been a thought that pushes forward the idea of sharing the process and allowing the credit to fall where it is due; to open up these roads and let other travelers see where they lead me, since I have almost no idea most of the time where I am going, and it makes for good conversation.
It will be a year or so before the Little Horse lectures sort themselves out, and I can see the landscape they lead to and occupy, but I have it on my list of things to do. I have started work. Each day I wake up, look for a moment at the sun, feel the Rays, then turn and see what they are revealing.
All this also by way of saying that Listen to the Band is in a happy home now, and among people who seem to welcome it and love it and can do a great job of publishing it. No, I can’t say yet who that is, but suffice to say I am well pleased at how this is turning out, and am working hard to be patient and let LTTB unfold the way LSHONZ is. Having landed in America in a happy home LTTB is now off to the Frankfurt book fair, to meet other editors and publishers.
It is on the first step of its thousand mile journey, just like all of us.
Infinitia, on the other hand has come home. We start shipping the First Edition a week from Monday.
Children. They wander where they will."
