Michael Nesmith to perform with The Monkees in Los Angeles in September
Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork were guests of Laura Shine on 91.9 WFPK Radio in Louisville, Kentucky this afternoon during the 3pm EST hour. Micky and Peter talked about a number of topics, including The Monkees' new album, Good Times!, the fact that they were in Louisville during Muhammad Ali's funeral today, the 50th Anniversary Tour, and more. Micky also said that "Terrifying," written by Zach Rogue, is one of his favorites to come from the sessions for Good Times!, and it was aired after Micky's comments.
Laura Shine also played a number of other songs from Good Times!, including the title track, "Me & Magdalena," "Love to Love," and "She Make Me Laugh." Peter talked about his brother's composition, "A Better World," available exclusively on the f.y.e. deluxe version of the album, which was also played on-air. Rounding out the playlist for the hour was "I'm a Believer," "Pleasant Valley Sunday," and "Riu Chiu," allowing Peter to talk about his affection for the song and noting that it was recorded live on the set of The Monkees' television series for their 1967 Christmas episode.
Micky and Peter were also asked about their earliest musical influences, and both chose songs to be played that they counted as particular favorites. Micky selected "Baby Please Don't Go" by Them (featuring Van Morrison):
After talking about his Greenwich Village days and his friendship with Stephen Stills, Peter requested "Whispering Bells" by The Del-Vikings:
A surprise came for listeners at about 3:40pm EST when Michael Nesmith phoned from his home in California to join the program. Laura Shine asked Nez what he has been working on as of late, and Michael comically replied saying he was busy playing the video game Warcraft, which caused Peter to interject, jokingly telling Nez that he should be working on his upcoming book (which is due to the publisher this fall). Michael asked Micky and Peter how their tour was progressing, stating that he has read all of the positive reviews the shows have been receiving. Micky talked to Nez about Good Times! and how well it is performing on the charts, and Michael said he has been following everything and has been pleasantly surprised. Nez then asked Micky and Peter when they all could get together to play live, and he suggested the September 16 concert at the Pantages Theatre in Los Angeles (get your tickets now!). Michael also spoke about how much he wants to join Micky and Peter on tour.
Asked by DJ Shine to choose an influential song from his youth, Michael selected "Bo Diddley" by Bo Diddley:
I hope everyone had a chance to listen to this hour-long program with The Monkees. Laura Shine did a wonderful job, and it was a very unique moment to have Micky, Peter, and Michael all together on the radio. I'm working on gaining audio of the entire hour from WFPK, so please stay tuned!
