If you are fan of The Monkees' 1987 album, Pool It! (and even if you are not), this edition of the Nesmith, Tork, Goffin & King podcast will be sure to please! Listen as host Mark Kleiner inquires about the seemingly long-lost second version of "Anytime, Anyplace, Anywhere" with the song's co-writer Dick Eastman and chats with '80s Monkees manager David Fishof about record label interest for Pool It! Mark also speaks with former Rhino Records graphic artist Lisa Sutton, who discusses the album cover photo session, and finally, there's a revealing interview with the LP's producer, Roger Bechirian.
But wait, there's more! Mark also debuts the previously unheard demo for "Heart and Soul," the first single issued from Pool It!

I thought this podcast series was supposedly focusing on their solo years for Nez and Tork

Monkees fans are a tough bunch to please sometimes. This podcast is totally different than others and it's much welcomed. It is not an album review of Pool It, it goes into the behind the scenes aspects. Content that is truly new and great to hear. Looking forward to Part 2. And I believe the name of the podcast is a parody of Dolenz, Jones, Boyce & Hart.

Agreed. Already the best Monkees podcast out there.

While I appreciate the Zilch podcast, their production values aren't great and I feel like I am often getting the Rhino company line from them. As a huge monkees' fan, the breathless and at times nearly sycophantic podcast interview around the Mike & Micky Show record (a great record nonetheless) was particularly revealing.

Agreed! All too often the Zilch podcast comes off as an infomercial. The constant pleas from the host to "Make sure you go out and buy this!" and "Make sure you get your tickets now!" or even "There won't be many more chances like this one!!" I understand of course that the guests are on there to promote their product just like on any other talk show. But save the "Thank for stopping by Andrew and folks remember the new Monkees album is available now" for the end of the interview and leave it at that. But instead we have to be told over and over again during the podcast. Distracting and gets old.

I like Zilch overall. They release podcasts regularly - very good audio quality. Usually the guest interviews are decent. I just ignore the stuff I don't care for. Not usually into the TV episode recap reviews, those are mostly dull. ....

I think its always fascinating to hear about the behind the scenes aspect to any record the Monkees have made. But we all are going to have varied opinions on the actual product itself. Thats part of the fan experience. Everyone has their favorites and not so favorite. Thats life.

Fantastic episode! I grew up on Pool It so it has good vibes with me to this day. The heck with the haters! I taped the video for Heart and Soul off some cable music show back in the day and watched it over and over and over.

Amen to that! I grew up on it too, so there's that strong nostalgia feeling when I listen to it. That summer of 1987... getting Pool It, Missing Links, Live 1967 and a new tour... was amazing. I was blasting the CD on the stereo just the other day singing along at the top of my lungs to the whole thing. Even "She's Moving In With Rico." :)

The more Monkees podcasts, the more I can listen to if I want to or not. I do like this one, lots of obscure info being shared! Pool It is not my favorite, but I was a teen when it came out, so it holds a special place in my own music nostalgia.

I enjoyed the podcast for the most part. I have always loved Pool It! from the day it came out...yes there are a few clunkers on there but I still listen to it to this day. I love the atmosphere of the album, the fun feel of the tracks and if you were a teenager in the 80's as I was, it brings back some great memories. It is great that there are interviews with the producer Roger, but I wish we could have heard more about the actual songs and not what they ate at his house. What I did find interesting is the story of the cover art of the first Rhino LP reissues. My favorite Monkees album, Pisces Aquarius Capricorn & Jones ltd was a recreation by a graphics designer? Wow. I bought all of the Rhino reissues in 1986. I hope there is a part 2 Pool It podcast, I would love to hear more about the actual recording of that album and studio stories, Thank you for posting it! Love Monkees Live Almanac

I Loved the Pool It album. Heart and Soul” was a good single, This Shows The Monkees in the 80s sound. They can adapt to the times like The Rolling Stones and The Beach Boys! Who Had Kokomo a number one hit. Micky can sing anything. That Was Then This Is Now was a very 80s sound. People loved it. But Heart and Soul was not a good follow up? Please give me break. It was perfect. Every new Album can’t sound like the 60s Like Good Times” Good Times was great they had many unfinished songs from the 60s . If Mike And Micky do a good Pop album we Shouldn’t compare it to what their 60s output was. They need to Grow if they need to . I loved the Pod cast on Pool it!

I don’t know why Sales of the Monkees Pool it album were not as high. MTV Wouldn’t play the single Video “Heart and Soul” but others did Nickelodeon played it . It got many requests as for MTV viewers Requested it too and the chose to ignore the fans saying it don’t fit them anymore and The Monkees thing was over. Lack of Airplay didn’t help the single either. It only charted as high as # 83 . Many didn’t know there was a new album out. MTV really messed things up over a dispute with the group about a business thing I read in Monkees Bio Monkees Tale. Maybe because Mike was not on the Album too. Who knows . They were on all the talk shows promoting It. Don’t make any sense.
