Set List & Footage: Monkees Farewell Tour stops at Graceland (UPDATED)

After a short break, The Monkees Farewell Tour resumed last night with a performance in Memphis, Tennessee at Soundstage at Graceland. Thanks a lot to Andrew Sandoval for sharing the set list with the Live Almanac:
Monkees Farewell Tour Memphis
Since opening night last month in Spokane, Washington, the set has remained fairly consistent. "Through the Looking Glass" was switched out in favor of "Steam Engine" for three shows, but "Steam Engine" has now been replaced by "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You." Originally closing the main set before the encore, "Pleasant Valley Sunday" is now slotted right before intermission.

While in Memphis, Micky Dolenz visited Graceland and was joined by Andrew Sandoval and members of the band and crew.

Tonight, Micky and Nez will perform at Tivolli Theatre in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Here are a few videos from Memphis. Check back soon for more footage!

Boooo. I’ve never seen them do Through the Looking Glass and was looking forward to hearing it tonight.
Still a stellar setlist.

Have they *ever* done "Through the Looking Glass" in concert?
(Actually, they probably did play it during the 80s tours)

It's a pretty classy playlist. Thank goodness they've stopped playing "That was Then, This is Now," and they never play anything from Justus. I don't think they've ever played anything from that album since the end of the UK tour. I'm not sure if it was because they realized how weak the songs are from Justus, or because it was such a flop and a fiasco.

It's a shame that more tracks from Justus didn't end up in concert more frequently... I think the major reason that the Justus material doesn't make it into concerts is that the band (rightfully) believed that no one would know those songs.

Given Micky's recent comments about "obscure songs" (while referencing Love is Only Sleeping of all things) leads me to believe that the Monkees themselves have no idea how many fans know their catalogue. As the nostalgia set of attendees pass on, their audience is increasingly made up of later fans who know a lot of their catalogue.

In my age bracket (coming up on my 30's), my peers, if they know the Monkees at all, are big fans of 60s/70s music, and generally seem to view the Monkees, Beatles, Stones, Beachboys, etc... as a monolith. People in my demo know more Monkees songs than I'm a believer, most people I know personally came to the Monkees through the Head soundtrack of all things (likely because they played the whole soundtrack on tour for the past decade), and the criterion collection released HEAD on bluray... Talk to a younger fan at the concerts, and they are talking about Nez' work with the FNB, or how great HEAD is, or how awesome PACJ is.

Contrasting that to the "white heads" in the audience, and you're lucky if they know anything other than "the green one".

So, I think, if the Monkees played "You and I" or "Regional Girl" most people at the show would recognize it. I just think that the Monkees themselves don't think anyone would know the song.

Let's face it, Mike & Micky (particularly) have self-confidence issues when it comes to the Monkees. Micky is a "play the hits" kind of guy... and I doubt Mike realized how many people loved the Monkees and found value in their material until these past few years.

Andrew always said, Davy was the only true "monkees fan" of the Monkees... and if he were alive... I bet he would want to sing You & I, or, It's not too late. If we would want those songs over the others is open for discussion lol

The songs from Justus didn't make it past 1997--the year they were first played. Mike walked out on those songs after the first UK shows were done. That album got pretty awful reviews, and why would they want to play the weak songs from that album when they have a whole slew of great songs from their heyday that they can play? Heck, they never even played the extended version of "Circle Sky" again.

I have no idea what you're talking about with the "white heads" and so forth... News for you: You ARE one of the youngsters if you're "coming up on" your 30s. I doubt you'll make the same argument again more ability for retrospection. Those young kids who like Head and PAC&J...they're me! and I'm 44. They are the key sounds of the Monkees. "Pleasant Valley Sunday" will probably still be alive in another 50 years. I highly doubt "I'll Be True to You" will. (And that was by Gerry Goffin! I can't believe Micky heaps so much praise on these songwriters-for-hire).

"While I Cry" is in the set list? I'm sold.

Looking forward to seeing this show. Micky's voice is still just incredible.

Andrew:
Any word why the 10/15 Savannah show was postponed and will it be rescheduled? I had tickets and was looking forward to it

On Sept. 28, Micky tweeted:

Folks, the Mayor of Savanah, GA has just announced that there will be no live shows the month of October. This means the Monkees show scheduled for 10/15 has been POSTPONED. They are working with promoters to reschedule, so hold onto your tickets.

It's great to see a rotating position on the set list -- it adds a vitality to the tour. While I love "Looking Glass," I was grateful to hear "Steam Engine" in Phoenix, because its inclusion meant all 9 "original" albums were represented in the show. "A Little Bit Me" is a cool follow-up -- evocative of Davy, well suited for Micky, and a great singalong. Drop in "Shorty Blackwell" and my mind will be BLOWN!

As others have mentioned, “Steam Engine” was not one any of the original albums. It certainly SHOULD’VE been, but was not.

Shame it was dropped. It’s better than “Looking Glass.” Also better than “Little Bit Me.”

Sorry, but “Little Bit Me,” while an OK record, is a bad choice for The Mike & Micky Show. They are already doing a Davy tribute with “Daydream Believer.” No need to include another. This show is about Mike and Micky.

Neither Micky or Mike had anything to do with “Little Bit,” and Mike rather famously dislikes that songs. On previous tours, he left the stage for it. That song was basically the last straw with Kirshner, leading up to Nez putting his fist through a wall. Why inclued that song in the show — or live album — at all?

I’d much rather have “Steam Engine” or perhaps “Looking Glass” in the show. Or how about “Midnight Train”?

What original album was Steam Engine on? I thought it was not released on an album until it appeared on the Monkee Business picture disc in 1982.. (at least in America).

It was considered for inclusion on Present and Changes but wasn't released on LP until Monkee Business, I believe. While the the OP must have thought it was on changes, I agree with his larger point. Steam Engine is a much better track than Looking Glass

Agreed...I was present at the San Antonio Sound Check and got to see them run through Steam Engine as a bonus (we had a choice of Through the Looking Glass or Steam Engine and Steam won by show of hands...easily). That is a GREAT live song!

Things are subjective. I think "Justus" has fantastic songs. Fascinating and exciting album. Does anyone mean to tell me they don't think an audience wouldn't go crazy to "Regional Girl" live?

"Justus" seems to be a "marmite" album among fans. I love it and it is certainly in my top 3 Monkees' Albums. Agree that Regional Girl would fit in well. Some of the other songs may be too personal and although It's Not Too Late is another stand out track I cannot imagine anyone but Davy singing it.
Just us was featured in the 1997 British concerts and these attracted at least one very unpleasant newspaper review. Michael left after these concerts.
It may be that this period holds mixed emotions for the group.
Anyway the concerts were much appreciated and not only by longterm fans.
